Pendle Hill Story Map

In the spring of 2022, I embarked on an intriguing journey as Cathy Hopely and Hetty Burne tasked me with creating a captivating story map for the Pendle Hill landscape partnership project. The goal was ambitious yet inspiring: to visually encapsulate the diverse threads of the project and showcase their collective impact through a narrative that brimmed with richness.

Throughout the summer of 2022, I delved into the intricacies of the project, meticulously crafting different 'layers' of the map to weave together its multifaceted aspects. From the depths of archaeology to the tapestry of social history, the revitalization of infrastructure, and the very essence of the landscape's identity, each layer was carefully researched and designed to interlace and tell an immersive tale. This process often involved translating these elements onto a sprawling pieces of paper, mapping out connections and forming the foundational structure of the map.

As August rolled in, the research and narrative began to crystallize, prompting me to translate my vision into tangible drafts at A2 scale. With each iteration, the map's design evolved in tandem with the maturing content, gradually revealing the overarching story that lay beneath the surface. Melding traditional and digital techniques, I brought the Storymap to life through an intricate blend of traditional mixed media and digital software software. Every stroke and pixel was carefully orchestrated to capture the essence of our local communities, imbuing it with elements like the evocative poem 'Pendle Grammar' by Seàn Hewitt.

By the time September arrived, the final design took definitive form through the mastery of Adobe Software. It was then entrusted to the capable hands of Peter Scott Printers, a local establishment known for its commitment to sustainability. Printed on eco-friendly paper certified to reduce its environmental footprint, the Storymap stood as a testament to both creativity and conscientiousness.

Pendle Hill Story Map Cake

The culmination came in October, as the Pendle Hill Landscape Partnership project drew to a close. The Storymap, an embodiment of artistic expression and community collaboration, underwent a delightful transformation, emerging as a spectacular cake. Each radical individual has their face adorned with matching cupcakes, symbolizing unity and celebration in a truly delectable way! This confluence of art and confection has hopefully left a lasting impression etched in both memory and taste buds!!
